Homeowners ask us this one almost every week. They want a patio, they have a budget, and they cannot decide between pavers and a poured concrete slab. There is no single right answer, but there is a right answer for your yard and how you plan to use it.

Concrete: cheaper to pour, harder to fix

A poured concrete patio usually costs less up front than pavers. It goes in faster too. The catch is what happens when a NJ winter gets into it. Concrete is one solid surface, so when it cracks, and around here it eventually does, you are looking at patching that never quite matches or tearing out a whole section. You cannot fix one spot cleanly.

If you like the look of poured concrete and you want to keep the cost down, it is a solid choice. Just know that repairs are an all or nothing job.

Pavers: costs more, but you can fix one at a time

Pavers cost more to install because it is more labor. Every piece is set by hand on a compacted base. What you get for that is a surface that moves with the ground instead of fighting it. When one paver cracks or a corner settles, you lift that paver and reset it. No patching, no color mismatch, no tearing out the patio.

That matters a lot in Essex, Morris, and Union County, where the freeze and thaw cycle works on everything outdoors. A paver patio can be repaired in an afternoon. A cracked slab cannot.

So which one should you pick?

If up front cost is the deciding factor and you are fine with a plain look, concrete does the job. If you want more design options and you would rather deal with small easy repairs than a big one down the road, pavers earn their price. For most homeowners planning to stay in the house a while, pavers end up being the better long term value.
