A new driveway is one of the bigger exterior projects a homeowner takes on, and it's one where the result depends almost entirely on what happens under the surface. Whatever material goes on top, asphalt, pavers, or concrete, the base is what decides whether the driveway stays smooth and level or starts to crack, sink, and pool water.
This page is the overview of driveway paving: your material options, how the work is done, what drives the price, and the questions homeowners ask us most. For details on a specific material, follow the links to those pages.
Your Driveway Options
Asphalt
The most affordable option and flexible with freeze-thaw. Needs sealing every few years. See our asphalt paving page for details.
Pavers
Interlocking pavers give the best looks and can be repaired one unit at a time, at a higher cost. See our paver installation page.
Concrete
Durable and low maintenance with finish options like stamping, at a mid-to-higher price. See our concrete driveways page.
Belgian Block Accents
Many NJ driveways add a Belgian block apron or border to an asphalt or paver driveway for durability and a classic look.
We help you weigh cost, looks, and maintenance and pick the right material for your home and budget.
Why the Base Decides Everything
The single biggest factor in how long a driveway lasts is the base underneath: excavation, a properly compacted crushed stone sub-base, and correct grading for drainage. This is invisible once the job is finished, which is exactly why some contractors cut it short. A driveway on a weak or shallow base will fail early no matter how good the surface looks on day one. We build the base right because that's what we're standing behind.
Our Process
Estimate and Planning
We measure the driveway, check drainage and slope, and go over material options.
Removal and Excavation
We remove the old driveway and excavate to the depth the new base needs.
Base Preparation
We install and compact a crushed stone sub-base and grade it so water drains away from the house and garage.
Surface Installation
We install your chosen surface: asphalt, pavers, or concrete, each to its proper depth and detail.
Edging and Aprons
We finish edges and install any Belgian block apron or border.
Cleanup and Guidance
We clean up and tell you when the driveway is ready to use and how to care for it.
What Affects the Cost
Driveway pricing depends on a handful of things.
Material
Asphalt is typically the most affordable, pavers the most expensive.
Size, Shape & Removal
The size and shape of the driveway and how much old-surface removal is needed.
Base & Drainage
The depth of the base and any drainage or grading work.
Aprons & Access
Any aprons or borders, plus how easy the site is to access.
A straightforward asphalt replacement costs less than a large paver driveway with borders. We give a free written estimate after seeing the site.
How Long a Driveway Lasts
It depends on the material and the base. Asphalt commonly lasts 15 to 20 years or more with sealing, concrete 25 to 30 years or more, and pavers can last the longest since damaged units can be replaced. In every case, a solid base and good drainage are what get you the long end of those ranges.
