A brick walkway is one of the most classic ways to connect a driveway, entry, or garden path. Brick adds warmth and curb appeal that concrete can't match, and when it's set on a proper base it stays put through years of foot traffic and NJ freeze-thaw.

As with any hardscape, the base and the edging do most of the work of keeping it level. This page covers how brick walkways are installed, the pattern and setting options, what affects the price, and the questions homeowners ask us most.

Why It's Worth It

Why Homeowners Choose Brick

Brick brings a timeless, high-end look and holds its color over time. Individual bricks can be lifted and reset if a section ever shifts, which is easier than patching poured concrete. It pairs well with brick and stone homes and with other masonry on the property.

Two Ways to Lay It

Setting Methods

Sand-Set (Dry-Laid)

Brick laid over a compacted stone base and bedding sand, with joint sand swept between. Flexible with freeze-thaw and easy to repair.

Mortar-Set

Brick set in mortar over a concrete base for a rigid, permanent surface. A cleaner look with no joint sand, but it needs a solid base to avoid cracking.

We recommend the method based on your site, drainage, and the look you want.

How We Build It

Our Process

1

Layout and Estimate

We map the path, check slope and drainage, and go over pattern and setting method.

2

Excavation and Grading

We dig out the path and grade it so water drains away from the house.

3

Base Preparation

We install and compact a crushed stone base, the step that keeps the walkway from settling and heaving.

4

Edging

We set edge restraints so the bricks stay tight and don't spread over time.

5

Bedding and Laying

We add bedding sand (for sand-set) or a mortar bed, then lay the bricks in your chosen pattern.

6

Joints and Finish

We sweep in joint sand or point the mortar joints, then compact and clean the surface.

Budgeting for the Job

What Affects the Cost

Brick walkway pricing depends on a handful of things.

Length & Pattern

Herringbone and detailed patterns take more labor than running bond.

Setting Method & Brick

Sand-set versus mortar-set, and the brick you choose.

Base & Drainage

Base and drainage work needed for the site.

Access

How easy the site is to access.

A simple straight path costs less than a long curved walkway with borders. We give a free written estimate after seeing the site.

Longevity

Maintenance and Lifespan

A properly based brick walkway lasts for decades. Sand-set walkways may need joint sand refreshed occasionally and the odd brick reset if the ground shifts. Mortar-set walkways need the joints kept sound. Sealing is optional and helps with stain resistance and color. The main cause of early trouble is a weak base or missing edging, both of which we handle in the build.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a brick walkway cost?
It depends on length, pattern, setting method, and brick choice. A short running-bond path is the most affordable; long curved walkways with borders cost more. We price it after seeing the site.
Sand-set or mortar-set, which is better?
Sand-set flexes with freeze-thaw and is easy to repair. Mortar-set gives a rigid, joint-sand-free surface but needs a solid concrete base. The right choice depends on your site and the look you want.
Do brick walkways get weeds between them?
Sand-set joints can. Polymeric joint sand hardens and resists weeds and erosion far better than plain sand.
Will a brick walkway heave in winter?
Not if it's built on a proper compacted base with drainage and edging. Frost heave problems come from a skipped or shallow base.
Can a damaged brick walkway be repaired?
Yes. Individual bricks can be lifted and reset, which is one of brick's biggest advantages over poured surfaces.
Brick or concrete pavers for a walkway?
Clay brick holds color naturally and has a classic look. Concrete pavers come in more shapes and colors and often cost less. Both work well on a good base.
